Welcome, interns, to the Career and Leadership Workshop! This workshop is an integral part of your internship program, providing a week-long opportunity to enhance your exposure to many career fields and their leadership skills. You and other interns will showcase the results of your summer projects through both formal and informal presentations. You will also engage with professionals in their fields through panel discussions, developmental sessions, and various activities. Additionally, the workshop is crucial for evaluating the program experience to identify successes and areas for improvement in the future. We hope you enjoy being in Washington, DC, network, and have fun!

From addressing health crises to combating climate change and promoting social justice, these obstacles demand collective action. Vela was named Deputy Director, exercising the authority of the Director of the National Park Service. He had been serving as Deputy Director of Operations from October 1, 2019 – August 7, 2020. Vela is the first Latino to lead the National Park Service.

16th NPS Director, National Park Service
Mainella served as the sixteenth NPS director from July 18, 2001, to October 16, 2006. The first woman to head the 85-year-old agency, she came to the National Park Service with more than 30 years of experience in the park management and recreation field.

15th Director, National Park Service
Stanton served as the fifteenth NPS director from August 4, 1997, to January of 2001. The first African American director, Stanton took a particular interest in increasing the diversity of the service's staff and public programs to better serve minority populations.
